Technology as a national strategy in Nigeria

Yele-Thoughts-March2021

If Nigeria decides to base the National Strategy on the production of gas because, we know, oil is dwindling and dying, then we can create an eco-system around gas production. That ecosystem will be driven totally by technology. We can create lots of intellectual property around it from the extraction to everything; to the transportation by pipelines, monitoring it and all the likes using the software specifically designed and implemented. The caveat here is that there has to be that desire for development, as understood by economists. There is a dichotomy between growth and development. One can factually state that the economy is growing and there is no development. An economy growing without development can be liken to a tree with a lot of leaves but no fruits. When we have real growth, we expect to see development. If we...

Yele-Jan2021-Newsletter

Especially in challenging times like the one we are living in; economic independence and innovation has to be foremost in the thinking of leaders-whether it be companies or countries, this is the time for innovative disruption. Life and businesses have been totally and, sometimes, fatally disrupted, but as a nation we are embarking on projects and making decisions for which this generation will not want to be linked in 10 years’ time. Nigeria, for a long time, has lived off the inherent capabilities of her people, endowments, and intellectual desire. We are now firmly at the crossroads where the country will either rise by the genuineness and innovative nature of enterprises birthed or it will once again fall into the trap of colonisation-this time more economic than political. Someone said Nigeria has everything to succeed yet the country has not...

More automation will lessen rampant corruption

Whenever human beings are integrated in a process, there is a high likelihood of corruption. Nigeria now ranks 146th out of 180 countries in the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, slipping from the 136th place it occupied in 2015. Nigeria scored 26/100 and Transparency International says, “To end corruption, we [must] promote transparency, accountability, and integrity at all levels and across all sectors of society.” The Breeding Ground Two things are important for corruption to thrive one is monopoly or asymmetry of information. The other condition is monopoly of discretion. Where one party can take a decision without being checked. So, if anybody in leadership is saying that they are fighting corruption either by hounding people or by making senseless noise, they have not started anything because we know that the solution is clearly different from that. Nigeria’s faulty compensation challenge

Yele-Newsletter-Oct2020-Cover

The year 2020 has been a chastening one for the world, including Nigeria, where there has been the added worrisome trend of violence, killings, and looting because people are angry with their leaders and suddenly the elite have become vulnerable to this anger. Since 1960, the country has tried to inculcate an inclusive political system with the regions as the focal points. The central government allowed these regions to develop at their own pace, with their own resources – physical and material. But then came the creation of states, and the republic meant those that had gone ahead had to wait for those lagging. Thus the entry of the quota system, and we subsequently pushed aside the system of merit. In 2020, the chickens have finally come home to roost. This is not saying quota system is bad – what...

African elites need to step up now

Mindsets about elitism and politics must change Barack Obama said, “…a faith in little dreams; an insistence on small miracles…”. at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Four years later, in 2008, he became the first black president of the United States of America. His power of comprehension and acceptance came through in that speech and that translated to authority. The meeting of power and ideas became truly evident in his story, but that combo is sorely lacking in Nigeria and on the African continent. It does not matter whether some people have access to certain opportunities, we must believe that all men are born equal. This is the leveller and equality enabler. This is what has seen people like Barack Obama, who became the US president, attain great heights. As black people, we must remind ourselves, ‘Yes, we can’. Until we...

Our lives have changed permanently and so must our innovation strategies

There is nothing that could have predicted the outbreak and severity of Covid-19. It caught us unawares and grossly unprepared. How could we? The last world epidemic was in 1920, which means that many people alive today have never witnessed anything near what has happened where we have seen a complete shutdown of social and business activities. Entire countries are locked down by “stay at home” orders from their respective governments. Our lives have changed almost permanently and one of the implications is, a lot of what we used to do on a one-on-one or contact basis have become permanently disrupted. Businesses have been seriously impacted and some industries such as aviation, travel, logistics, and entertainment will struggle for a while before attaining a new normal. Recollect that when the lock-down was partially lifted in Lagos – we witnessed a...

3 tips for Entrepreneurs-Okeremi

The decision to become an entrepreneur comes in various formats. It can be the vision to identify a need and the attendant ability to provide a solution; it might also be the ability to create a need and develop a solution, and it might just be the ability of been aware of a product that will be needed. All these avenues can lead to the start to developing the business, but making it grow and become a success needs more than just an idea. 1. Be Aware Perhaps opportunity consciousness is the biggest differentiator between successful entrepreneurs and other people. While ordinary people see problems, successful entrepreneurs see opportunities that must be tapped into. Nigeria, as a case study has so many challenges, to which solutions are needed but it is for those who are self-aware and courageous to pursue...

TECH-DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA-ENTREPRENEUR

For Nigeria to gain the maximum from technology combined with the inherent skilled populace, we have to do what other countries have done. That is develop the tech scenario so much that the existing structure becomes so big and profitable that new startups spring up on their heels and can be acquired. There is a future. I recently came across a young man who said to me that his business is to come to Nigeria and look for smart software developers, He will brush them up and look for jobs for them in Europe and he was very proud of it. That is the problem we are facing here. A good number of people feel that they are not accepted here they end up in Europe and America and that is really unfortunate for Nigeria. These are people that Andela...

Eduacting the future entrepreneur

Nigeria is blessed with a big population; the largest Black Country in the world is between 190 and 220 million [depending on who is counting] so having 170 universities is a plus but what are the qualities that qualify the teachers in these citadels? In an interview published in IT Edge News, Dr. Yele Okeremi, Managing Director of Precise Financial Systems Ltd argues that there must be a change from the current system that qualifies who can teach the future to the current students. "There’s an old saying that when someone says he has never seen anything like this before, he only wants to scare the people that are listening to him. "There is nothing new under the sun. This is not the first country in the world that has suffered gown and town challenges. Other countries have done this....

IT can replace Oil-and-Gas-Okeremi

One of the industries that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) hopes to develop is the IT industry. The action word is ‘hope’. It is presumed that the IT industry is not just able to create an economy of affluence; it could generate employment for the teeming youth in the country. For the IT industry to become an alternative to the very prominent oil sector, its capacity needs to be enhanced and investments to the industry encouraged. Consequently, it is necessary to understand the factors that make IT entrepreneurs thrive and ultimately increase their numbers. This is despite the lack of structures that are taken for granted in America and Europe. This makes it pertinent to contextualize the development of successful IT entrepreneurs in an environment that does not have facilitating institutions that have helped the development of IT entrepreneurs...
